What Is OEM Ceramic Development
OEM is specification-led. The buyer normally supplies the target shape or dimensions, artwork, colours, material preference, packaging requirements and quantity. Willcan reviews whether the requested combination can be manufactured reliably, prepares samples and confirms the production standard before bulk production.
OEM works best when brand guidelines are fixed. Ceramic production may still require adjustments because glaze, firing and curved surfaces can change colour or artwork appearance.
What Is ODM Ceramic Development
ODM begins earlier. A buyer may provide a theme, moodboard, target consumer or one design element rather than a finished specification. Willcan can help develop the visual direction, select practical shapes, extend the concept across mugs, cups, bowls and plates, recommend surface techniques and coordinate packaging.
ODM does not automatically mean creating a new mould. Existing shapes can become distinctive through original artwork, colour placement, glaze combinations, embossing or packaging. Custom shapes are considered when form is central to the concept and the tooling and quantity are justified.

2. Build the Practical Specification
Shapes, glaze references, decoration placement, dimensions and packaging are organised into a clear sample plan. Alternative processes can be proposed when the original request is difficult to repeat.
3. Approve Physical Samples
Samples are checked for size, colour, surface result, handle comfort, set compatibility and packaging fit. Confirmed samples and specifications become the reference for production.
4. Plan Production and Quality Checks
The final route is planned around compatible bodies, glazes, decoration and packing. Quality checkpoints are defined for the features that matter most to the product.
