EXW vs FOB vs CFR vs CIF for Ceramic Orders

How to compare freight responsibility risk transfer and destination charges before approving a supplier quotation

Willcan-News-18-EXW-FOB-CFR-CIF-Ceramic-Imports
EXW, FOB, CFR and CIF do not simply describe four price levels. They divide freight arrangements, costs, customs responsibilities and risk between buyer and seller. For ceramic orders, the safest comparison is to use the same named place or port, confirm Incoterms 2020, and list the charges that remain outside the supplier’s price. CIF is not a door-to-door or duty-paid quotation.

What Each Shipping Term Means

The table below gives a purchasing-level comparison. Risk transfer and cost responsibility are not always at the same point, especially under CFR and CIF.
Term
Seller arranges and pays

Buyer still handles
EXW
Goods made available at the named premises
At the named premises before loading
Loading, export, main freight, insurance and import
FOB
Export clearance and delivery on board at the named origin port
When goods are on board at origin
Main freight, insurance, destination and import
CFR
FOB responsibilities plus sea freight to the named destination port
When goods are on board at origin
Insurance, destination charges and import
CIF
CFR responsibilities plus minimum cargo insurance
When goods are on board at origin
Destination charges, import and inland delivery

Which Term Fits Your Buying Setup

EXW gives the buyer the most control but requires a capable forwarder in the supplier’s country; export clearance can also be difficult under a strict EXW arrangement. FOB is practical when the buyer wants to choose the ocean carrier and control freight. CFR suits buyers who want the supplier to book sea freight but will arrange insurance. CIF adds minimum insurance, yet the buyer still needs to confirm destination handling, customs clearance, taxes and inland transport.

Where Hidden Costs Usually Appear

Destination terminal handling, documentation or release fees, customs brokerage, inspection, storage, demurrage, import duty, VAT, inland trucking and unloading may fall outside a CFR or CIF quotation. Not every shipment incurs every charge, but the buyer’s forwarder should confirm the destination tariff before the order is approved. Under CIF, also check the insurance certificate, coverage level and claim route rather than assuming all transport risk stays with the seller.

Why Ceramic Packing Data Matters

Ceramics are heavy and breakable, so freight comparison depends on more than unit price. Request pieces per carton, carton dimensions, net and gross weight, total cartons, estimated CBM and the loading plan. A change from bulk packing to individual gift boxes can increase shipping volume and destination cost. Read Custom Ceramic Packaging: Boxes, Protection and MOQ for the packaging checks.

How Willcan Makes the Shipping Basis Clear

Willcan states the Incoterm and named place or port with the product quotation, then provides packing and cargo data for freight comparison. We can coordinate with the buyer’s nominated forwarder or review a CFR or CIF option through a shipping partner. Destination charges remain subject to confirmation by the buyer or local agent. Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Does CIF Include Every Cost to the Warehouse

No. CIF covers cost, sea freight and minimum insurance to the named destination port. Import clearance, duty, taxes, destination handling and inland delivery normally remain with the buyer.

  1. Does Risk Transfer at the Destination Port Under CFR or CIF

No. Under both terms, risk transfers when the goods are on board the vessel at the origin port, even though the seller pays freight to the destination port.

  1. Should a Quotation Say Only FOB or CIF

No. It should name the exact port or place and the rule version, such as FOB named origin port Incoterms 2020.
